In the UK, you can vote when you’re:

  • 18 years old in all elections in England, and Westminster Parliamentary elections in Scotland and Wales;

  • 16 years old in Scottish Parliament and Scottish local elections

  • 16 years old in Senedd elections and Welsh local elections and other elections held in Wales - when you're 18

You have to register to vote to be able to vote in any elections.

When you have applied to vote by post, you will need to return your postal vote form to your local authority. Once you have done this you should expect to receive your postal vote over the next 10 days.

When you receive your ballot you must:

  • put an X next to the candidate you choose, unless told otherwise

  • fill in the postal voting statement

  • Put both the ballot and postal voting statement in the return envelope and seal it

  • Post your ballot as soon as you can to make sure it’s counted

When you have registered to vote, if you're eligible, you will receive an email letting you know your application has been accepted.

Where to vote?

  • As your election gets closer, most people will receive a polling card by post. This tells you where your polling station is, which is where you will vote

When can I vote?

  • Polling stations are open between 7am and 10pm. You can only vote between these times

How do I fill in my ballot?

  • When you get to the polling station, you will be given a piece of paper called a ballot for each election you are eligible to vote in

  • You will then go to a private polling booth to mark who you are voting for

  • You must follow the instructions on the ballot paper when you complete it to make sure your vote will be counted

  • Once you have filled in your ballot, staff will show you where to place it

What do I need to take to vote in person?

  • You do not need your polling card to vote in person.

  • You do not need to take identification to vote
